My employer withheld Columbus tax, but I live in Reynoldsburg.  How can I get a refund?

Because income is taxed first where it is earned, if your wages were earned in Columbus you would owe Columbus tax on that basis and would not be due a refund merely because you live in Reynoldsburg (or any other municipality). If your employer's office location is in Columbus but you worked all or part of your time outside Columbus, you would be due a refund of all or part of your Columbus tax which you can claim by filing an individual tax return (Form IR-22) with our office. In this situation, the wages you claimed as having been earned outside of Columbus would be subject to the Reynoldsburg tax. An employer's certification is required with all requests for refund of tax withheld on wages claimed as having been earned outside of Columbus. Also, if you incurred employee business expenses in earning your wages, you may claim a refund of the tax withheld to Columbus on the amount of wages that are reduced by the portion of your employee business expenses that you claimed and properly reported on Form 2106 of your federal return.
